OPI Femme de Cirque Soft Shades Collection Spring 2011 Swatches and Review

OPI's annual Soft Shades collection is circus-themed this year. I have to say, I like the theme! No Soft Shades collection can rival my love for the old Princess Charming collection, but the names of the polishes in this set are fantastic.


In The Spotlight Pink. A soft, squishy-looking milky pink jelly. This pink is mostly neutral in the bottle, but it does border on warmer/peachy-toned against my skin.


So Many Clowns, So Little Time. This name seriously cracks me up... It's going on my list of all time favorite OPI names. The color is a creamy off white with a slight splash of pink and grey. Reminds me a bit of the whiter version of Bubble Bath.


Step Right Up. This one has a similar finish to So Many Clowns, but it has more pink and peach in it. Very pale, very white-based, slightly muted, like there's one drop of grey in it.


My favorite part of this collection is the glitter topcoat, I Juggle... Men. Well, it's not quite a glitter, but it's a sparkle. It's sort of like... maybe Orly Fifty-Four or CND Sapphire Sparkle, but it's even more like the duochrome shimmer in OPI Unripened / Nicole Blues In The Night. Funky irregular particles, like mini-flakes... Broken crushed flakes... Super duochrome gorgeous. It wouldn't show up on camera all by itself on my nails, but it's really intended for layering anyway, so I've layered it.

As you can see, it's subtle over the sheers, but it adds a nice touch of blue/purple duochrome sparkle. It really shows up best over darker colors. It's especially nice over Color Club Total Mystery.

The formula on these was difficult. I found it to be somewhat watery but goopy at the same time, a texture similar to early Big 3 Free polishes. I did have a hard time applying these. They wanted to run into my cuticles. The Pro-Wide brush seemed smaller and flatter than usual and that added to the difficulty. These are meant to be worn as sheers, but my nails are way too stained to wear them that way, so I did five coats of all. When worn sheer, they are very subtle, providing only a slight milky wash of color.

The exception is the I Juggle... Men topcoat, which is a nice thin, even texture. It dries very, very fast and quite shiny, which leads me to believe it is actually a topcoat, quick-dry even, and not just for layering. It's fantastic.

These would probably make a nice, soft, natural looking french manicure. One that looks like clean natural nails with a touch of softness.

While the colors aren't really my thing, I do love that glitter topcoat and I love the names. They're very, very sheer so if you're someone who is only into subtle tints on your nails, these might interest you.

Deborah Lippmann Spring 2011 Swatches and Review

This year's spring shades from Lippmann are soft and subdued.


Naked. This is a soft, milky neutral beige. You could call it nude, fleshy... Naked, really. It's almost my perfect 'Mannequin Hands' shade, but it's just a touch too tan. It can be worn sheer, but I think it looks best opaque like I'm wearing it here (three coats).

And the star in this spring duo....

Glitter In The Air. What can I even say about this color? I'm totally in love. Yes, I am in love with a sheer polish. It's true. I would have never expected this. Let me describe it. It's a milky, cloudy, gentle baby blue jelly. Very sheer. Sprinkled throughout the blue jelly base are shiny bits of large and small pink and blue glitter. It's not a dense glitter and you won't have full coverage with it, but that's the beauty of it. It reminds me of cotton candy and cupcake sprinkles and magic. It's just so romantic and dreamy looking. I'm wearing three coats and it's really sheer. It looks even better at four thin coats but I didn't get a picture of that. If you prefer a more opaque look (or just hate visible nail line), you can easily layer it over pastel blue or a white creme.

The formula on these was decent. They both start out sheer and can be layered for more coverage. With the texture of the formula on these polishes, it's best to wait a minute or so in between coats so that you don't get that goopiness that some sheer polishes can get when applying. Drying time was a little long, but not horrible.

Naked is nice, but Glitter In The Air is magical. It's a fantasy polish. Sheer polishes, especially sheer glitters, aren't something I usually like, but this one is different. It looks squishy and soft, like candy and marshmallows. And... unicorns!!

Borghese Almondine... What do you think?

I'm not that much of a nude/neutral polish wearer (except for the funky ones like Rescue Beauty Lounge Grunge), but for some reason this shade really caught my eye. It's Borghese Almondine.

It's a creamy, putty-like, nude-ish beigey funky kinda color (Mmm, creamy... soft creamy beige!) with little metallic microglitter particles. It's a really unusual color, sort of like a fleshy nude version of Zoya Harley. And I love looking at it in the bottle.... but I'm not so sure about it when it's actually on me.

Is it funky and pretty, or is it washed out and creepy? I can't decide. Yay or nay?

China Glaze Anchors Away Collection Spring 2011

This year is off to a really good start, polish-wise. The second new collection of 2011 is a great one- China Glaze Anchors Away. Looks like there's going to be a soft and muted yet not quite pastel color trend this spring...


Ahoy! You all know I'm not big on pink, but this pink is AMAZING. It's more of a deep magenta than a true pink, but it's a jelly and it has iridescent gold shimmer. The combination of the bright, colorful jelly and the glowing gold shimmer is just fantastic. The jelly base tints the gold flecks a little so you get lots of different tones sparking on your nails.


Below Deck. One of those ever-popular purple-grey shades. Is it Greige? I forget what term everyone's using for these now... Grurple? Anyway, I've heard from a few people that this was intended to be a replica of the old Channelesque, and it does look pretty similar! Channelesque seems lighter to me, though. This one reminds me more of Metro Chic.


First Mate. Lovely soft navy blue creme. It looks too bright in this picture- in real life it has a really soft, dusty sort of look. Really pretty. One of the only navy shades I like... Most of the time I feel like Navy can't decide if it's blue or black and it's always so dull... this one is perfect.



Hey, Sailor! This is an attention grabber for sure. Crazy bright loud obnoxious red creme. It looks dangerous! I love it. It has that retro sailor pin-up girl look to it, those kinds of reds are my favorites. This is almost a jelly, too, it has that soft squishy look to it when it's applied.



Knotty. This is an interesting shade- it's a glass fleck nude? It's a light tan/beige nude shade with silver-white flecks of shimmer. Maybe not the best color on me, but I really do like looking at it. I don't own many shades like this.



Life Preserver. A soft burnt orange. Really rich looking, so saturated and creamy. I really like orange polish and this one is not the common bright orange. It reminds me a lot of one of the shades from the Immaterial Girl collection from a few years back, but I can't remember the name! Vintage Crepe? Ah, I can't remember and now I'm rambling.





Lighthouse. Holy smokes, this yellow is awesome! And easy to apply! A bright yellow jelly base with shiny, sparkly pale yellow glass fleck shimmer. It has a lot of depth to it, I love the way the shimmer looks sitting in the lower layers of the polish and then how it sparkles at the top layer.




Pelican Gray. Light, pale grey, neutral, with a little soft shimmer to it. It's a hidden shimmer like the kind in Zoya Marley, you can't really see it but it gives a nice soft cloudy look to the color. Love these kinds of greys. Or maybe I just love all greys, I can't decide.



Sea Spray. So many beautiful colors in this collection... this might be one of my top favorites. It's a very pale blue but it's not pastel. It has a lot of grey in it and a very subtle shimmer. It looks rainy. Reminds me of something like Eyeko Rain Polish- rainy sky blue!



Starboard. Soft grassy green. What's not to love about this? It's my favorite type of green, too- yellow-leaning and not too blue. Very creamy soft finish, has that soft, cloudy marshmallow-ish look like the rest of the colors in this set have.


Sunset Sail. A peachy beige nude with some silvery microglitter. Looks a shade or two darker on the nails than it does in the bottle. It's on the warm side but I still think it looks pretty good on my cool skintone!


White Cap. Gorgeous. Sheer white jelly with gold duochrome shimmer. It's like a cross between a glass fleck and a flake finish- tiny little flat flakes that are very, very shiny. It's so bright and luminous, it looks so clean.

The formula on these was good. A little on the thick side, but with flawless application. Not runny or anything like that. The opacity on these is decent but I found that I needed three coats for complete coverage on most shades. All pictures are three coats, no basecoat or topcoat. They dry really shiny without topcoat. Drying time is average.

I really love these shades. Some of them look like other old China Glaze shades but I don't know if any are exact matches. I don't dislike a single shade in this entire collection- they're all beautiful! After all the dark vamps and shiny glitters of fall and winter, I'm really craving these types of soft, greyed-out muted creme shades. The smattering of glass flecks in the collection is just the icing on the cake for me. I'm quite pleased with these. I see myself wearing Sea Spray a lot this spring...

Two thumbs up for me. Refreshing change of pace from all the glitter-heavy manicures I've been sporting lately. Lots of wearable soft shades, very calming and peaceful.

Nubar Finest Silks Collection Winter 2010

I don't think this is intended to be a winter-themed or holiday-themed collection, it just happens to be being released for winter. More thoughts on this collection after the pictures!





Charmeuse. A soft coral-mauve creme. On the warm side. Looks like dark muted pink with some orangey tones. A little too dated for my tastes but it may look good on someone with a warmer skin tone.



Chiffon. Soft, muddy, mousy grey-taupe. Love these types of colors. Looks more grey in the picture than it does on me in real life- it's more tan toned in real life.



Marabout. Another gorgeous taupe-grey-muddy color. This one is darker than Chiffon, more purple toned (but not purple-looking) and less warm. This one seems to suit my skin tone better but they're both nice.



Moire. This is an odd color! It's a brown-toned medium pink nude... Very difficult to describe. It's fleshy and earthy. It's like coffee with cream mixed with the color of ham. It's breakfast colored!



Organza. Sheer pearly white shimmer. More of a pearl than a frost. Still has the same brushstroke issues as frosts do but it has that shiny, smooth pearl-like reflection on it. I'm sure this is meant to be worn sheer and I think it would actually look better sheer. I bet you could layer it to add shimmer to these colors as well.



Pekin. The lighter of the two reds in the collection. It's a medium bordering on dark red and it seems blue based to me.




Sateen. This is the darker of the two. It's a red wine color with a hint of brown undertone.



Taffeta. Soft warm milky brown with a touch of warm orange or pink in it. Not a pure milk chocolate color, it's more of a pink chocolate. Or perhaps... a brown peach? Skintone shade- most likely intended as a nude color for a deeper, warmer skintone than mine.


The formula on these was just perfect. Dreamy. Flawless, effortless application. Excellent coverage on all shades except Organza (I used three coats to build opacity, it's probably intended to be worh sheer). Drying time is good and I experienced no problems with the texture, application or brushes. The formula was really, really great, I am impressed with it more than I am with the colors....

These are all very soft, conservative, office-appropriate types of colors. Nothing fun or wild or attention-grabbing. I don't believe they were intended to be. Normally I would blast a collection for being this bland and safe, but in this specific instance I'm not going to. The press release states that they were aiming for a collection of timeless colors for every skintone with the benefit of a two-coat coverage formula, and that's exactly what they've created. Seems like Nubar is trying to expand their line lately- adding lots of shades in the same color family but with that lovely new formula. Reds, the greys, the greens, the corals, the purples, the browns....

I do like a couple of the colors- Chiffon and Marabout of course, but I'm also intrigued by Moire. While the collection doesn't suit my personal tastes, I gotta say that the formula was amazing. Their creme formula seems to have been perfected- comparable to Rescue Beauty Lounge's perfect creme formula. So, if you are looking for colors like these I'd recommend based on formula alone.

Though, I must say I was really looking forward to some sort of sparkly, glittery colorful winter/holiday type colors for their winter release.... I am a bit sad that they've done nudes and wines for the winter collection instead. Oh well... Maybe they'll have something more edgy and fun for Spring!

BB Couture For Nails Infamous Lovers Collection 2010: The Ladies

BB Couture once again creates some amazing unique green polishes. I'm thinking they have more greens in their line than any other brand I know... Am I right? Take a look at these:


Bonnie. Wow. Now THIS is a green. It's a midtone green jelly with BB Couture's signature tiny gold and green glitter. It is quite a bit like BB Couture Redwood Forest, but Bonnie seems brighter, a little lighter and has slightly more of a yellow tone. Here's a hideous mani I did with Bonnie as the base that shows the color a little truer because of the flash:

I know... My Funky French turned out to be more of a Fugly French... But, uh, try to ignore that part and you'll see what a great shade of green Bonnie is.



Carla. A super dark purple shimmer. How gorgeous is this? It's vampy purple and I love it. Lots of multicolored shimmer when the light hits it. More red-toned in real life. Great for fall. Amazing application, too.

Cleopatra. This one was really hard to photograph. This picture isn't quite true to life so I'll try to explain how it really looks. It's a blue-green base, you can see the green tone visible in the bottom of the photo, left hand side. But, instead of having just plain shimmer it has this crazy blue duochrome shimmer and lots of it. It sits on top of the color so you're seeing both the green and the blue fighting for attention. It's little bit like BB Couture For Men Pipe Bender in that aspect- the base and the shimmer fighting for attention, blue on green... Very cool effect.


Eve. Oh man, can you believe this? First Bonnie, now Eve? Can't get over how cool this is. It's a murky dark olive green base with red pearl duochrome and it's full of that pretty BB Couture tiny iridescent glitter. Reminds me of Nubar's Gem and Jewel, how there's that pearl duochrome base filled with glitter. Except this one is more iridescent green-gold than holographic like the Nubar ones.

Juliet. This is an odd one. It's somewhere between rose and nude, a creme base, but with speckles of black and silver microglitter. Very unique. One one hand it's cool because it looks like stone, like granite or even a little bit like a Corian countertop. On the other hand, the black glitter is so sparse that it almost looks like it's not supposed to be there- like you accidentally got ash or mascara flakes or Oreo crumbs on your nails while they were wet. I'm 50/50 on this one, cool but odd.


Pocahontas. Like Juliet, this is a creme base sprinkled with black and silver microglitter. The base color of this is the ever-present purple/grey combo, which, despite seeing 343907 polishes this color being released in the past four years, I'm still not sick of seeing. The speckles aren't as prominent in this one.


The formula on these was quite good. Easy application. I did three coats of each color and all but Carla seemed to need the third coat. No flaws in the brushes or bottles. Drying time was slightly longer than average.

There's supposed to be a set of BB Couture for Men polishes that go along with these, but I have not seen them. I kinda like that idea, though... A line of women for women, a line of men for men? Cute concept.

I'm digging this collection. Eve and Bonnie are my favorites and Carla is great too. But really, Eve and Bonnie... wow. Awesome. Keep making these awesome sparkly greens, BB Couture! We're happy that you do!
